Doug Smith

Doug Smith (Of Counsel) has been a California attorney since 2003. Mr. Smith received his Juris Doctor from University of California, Hastings. Mr. Smith holds an M.A. in Politics from Claremont Graduate University and a B.A. in Economics from Humboldt State University, minor in Philosophy.

While in law school, Mr. Smith law clerked for California Indian Legal Services (Oakland, California) and Hobbs, Straus, Dean and Walker, LLP (Washington, D.C.). Mr. Smith also externed for the Federal Public Defender’s civil habeas litigation unit in the Eastern District of California on cases that included political asylee status among other matters. Mr. Smith served as senior managing editor for the Hastings Communications and Entertainment Law Journal, advisory articles editor for the Hastings Women’s Law Journal, and treasurer of the Hastings Native American Law Students Association.

Mr. Smith practices in the field of employment law which has included matters related to redress of disability, religious and National Origin discrimination as well as more recent public labor union-related civil litigation on the side of employees and unions/union members. Mr. Smith has represented clients in arbitration, administrative, bench and jury trial matters as well as public entity, writ and appellate proceedings.

Mr. Smith also practices law in the area of Native American conservatorships. Mr. Smith represents Native American family members and professional fiduciaries in managing financial, cultural and legal resources as well as the health and welfare of disabled Native American tribal members.

During his career as an attorney, Mr. Smith has served as board member to two separate non-profit 501(c) tax-exempt corporation drug and alcohol rehabilitation facilities located in Southern California. Mr. Smith’s more recent community activities have included a Red Road-oriented drug and alcohol rehabilitation training completion certificate from White Bison, Inc. sponsored by Riverside-San Bernardino County Indian Health, Inc. (a Tribal government consortium/federal Indian health program which includes several medical clinics). Mr. Smith is dedicated to active participation in continuing education and advocacy ideals and principles for Native American cultural and economic preservation, protection and development as well as disability recovery and conciliation.
